The purpose of this study is to compare the ultrasound and the electromyogram (EMg) for the diagnosis of CTS. Material and methods: Between 2005 and 2008 42 patients with clinically diagnosed CTS were subjected both to high revolution ultrasound and EMg. With the use of a high resolution probe we measured the diameter of the median nerve before, after and inside the carpal tunnel. We considered the ultrasound to be positive for CTS if the diameter of the median nerve was increased before the carpal tunnel or decreased inside it. All the patients were additionally evaluated with an EMg.Results: The ultrasound was positive for CTS in all 41 and the EMg in 23. Therefore the sensitivity of the ultrasound is 97.56 % and of the EMg 56%.Conclusion: Our study confirms the usefulness of high resolution ultrasound for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.
