The world market shows an increasing demand for raw materials. Environmental awareness and energy savings are currently in focus, and the value of water as a sustainable resource is a key issue in many arid areas around the world. Ongoing developments in the field of thickening and filtration equipment have expanded the number of choices for dry stacking systems. These trends and changes in focus have had an effect on the transportation systems used for tailings. The market requires that we compare different transportation systems for tailings in more detail. Typical conventional transportation methods such as trucking and conveyor belts were complemented by hydraulic transfer via pipelines decades ago. However, due to high energy prices and increased environmental awareness, hydraulic transportation of tailings has changed over the years through thickening, filtration, and different disposal methods. This paper presents and compares the tailings transportation methods that are currently most common and discusses the impact of tailings transportation trends on slurry pumping equipment.
