The discharge performance of the batteries was improved by increasing the number of methoxyl groups in lignophenols, because the reaction area of the negative active mass increased. The charge performance of the batteries was improved by decreasing the number of methoxyl groups in lignophenols. It was considered that methoxyl groups in lignophenols inhibited the charge reaction. Lignophenols with various molecular structures were designed precisely. It was found that lignophenols were a very effective component as a negative additive.
