Currently in Brazil, long-term (horizon 20 to 30 years) and short-term (15 years horizon) energy expansion planning studies are carried out under the coordination of the Ministry of Mines and Energy. More recently the Federal Government has decided to carry out mid-term studies (15 years horizon). For long-term and short-term studies are adopted the computational models MELP and' NEWAVE, respectively. For mid-term studies there is not a specific model developed. In this context, this paper describes investigations carried out on the combined use :of MELP and NEWAVE models, involving an iterative process between them, which could be useful for mid-term expansion planning studies: Numerical results are presented using a case. study derived from the Brazilian interconnected power system.
