Proper Sampling Makes a Difference

Steam cycle chemistry analysis begins with the sampling methods and ends with the analytical instruments used. Instruments that monitor a power plant's water and steam chemistry have made significant advances over the past few years in reliability and sensitivity. Properly conditioned and consistent flow is critical to accurate and reliable of these on-line measurements. A major contamination incident occurred due to a demineralizer malfunction. The slow response of the on-line instruments showed problems with the old sample panels. Following the incident the utility decided to install new sample panels. This paper discusses their experience in specifying, installing and using new sample panels and the change they saw in responding to any out of limit conditions. The net result has been more precise water and steam chemistry data and operators that now trust the instruments.
