Novel Strategies for the Rapid Analysis of Cholesteryl Esters and Diglycerides using Direct-Infusion Electrospray Mass Spectrometry and Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Dissecting the different species of cholesteryl esters (CE) and diglycerides (DG) associated with cardiovascular injury is paramount to obtaining a better understanding of the etiology leading to cardiovascular disease. Thus, mass spectrometric methods capable of the rapid detection of both CEs and DGs present in diseased subjects would be integral in cardiovascular research. In this study, direct-infusion electrospray mass spectrometric (ESI/MS) strategies were developed and applied for the species-selective analysis of CEs and DGs by identifying and optimizing specific ionization and sample matrix parameters. These strategies were tested using complex samples, including samples containing isobaric species and biological samples containing CEs and DGs.
