The study clearly rationalized previous reports about the ionization behavior of standard PASHs under APCI MS. The production of only protonated ions is demonstrated under APCI. The ability to detect S1 class species as lone protonated species while averting derivatization approach extended the FT-ICR MS capability towards complex PASH mixture analysis. The relative abundance distribution of S1 class as a function of DBE and carbon number is presented in the shown plot. DBE 6,9 and 12 were the most abundant series. These indicate BT, DBT and BNT are the most abundant S1 class series in the thiophenic fraction. The result provides an established APCI-FT-ICR MS platform for the analysis of complex mono-, di- and multi-cyclic PASH mixture from other crude oil fractions. The study should be coupled with our previous APCI studies of various hydrocarbon classes4,5 to investigate a wider envelope of complex crude oil samples.
