For the basic, translational and clinical researcher using metabolic profiling in their studies, the steps starting from sample submission through processing of spectral output to data cleaning are largely unseen. For the scientist, the cleaned data, statistical analysis and bioinformatics output are the real products that are critical to turn an idea into useful information. Larger data sets of directed metabolic profiling and especially the growing use of untargeted profiling increasingly require individuals specifically trained to carry out complex data processing steps that lead to knowledge. In addition, raw and processed data must be maintained in a way allowing the end users to perform initial analysis and mine archived data.
