Novel phosphorylaton sites on 17 human brain proteins were detected. A peptide from GABA_A receptor was shown to contain two nitro and one phospho modifications in all the brain samples analyzed. Thus, our finding may have important biological implications in inhibitory neurotransmission. The differentially phosphorylated proteins we detected are critical for neuronal function. Most of the kinases that may phosphorylate these sites were previously reported to be hyperactivated during the HIV-infection. Therefore, our results provide a potential link between altered phosphorylation and changes in neuronal structures that may be important hallmarks in HAND progression. Nitrohydroxylated tryptophan and nitrated tyrosine residues were present on immunoglobulin variable chains, exclusively in the HIV-E samples set indicating a potential role of these modifications in the immune response during HIV infection.
