Sensitive and Specific Glycan biomarkers in lung cancer

Glycosylation is highly sensitive to the biochemical environment and has been implicated in development and disease. Lung cancer is the seventh major cause of death in the world and the death rate is gradually increasing every year. There is a clinical need for reliable biomarkers because current serum biomarkers for lung cancer are not enough for both sensitivity and specificity. In this study, a large set of human serum samples (n=90) are examined to determine the feasibility of glycomics approach for biomarker discovery. N-glycans are observed and several are identified as potential markers for lung cancer. This study suggests that serum glycomics may be useful for the detection of the disease.
