Acylcarnitines(ACs) are a group of esters derived from the conjugation of carnitine with fatty acids. They play an important role in the transport of fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane for fatty acid beta-oxidation. Acylcarnitine profiling of dried blood spots using tandem mass spectrometry provides important diagnostic information for the routine newborn screening of fatty acid oxidation (FAO) disorders and organic acidemias. Paper spray was developed as a fast, direct, and low-cost ambient ionization method for MS analysis. Its capability for complex mixture analysis has been demonstrated with dried blood spot and tissue samples. In this study, for the first time paper spray was applied for rapidly quantitating acylcarnitines in serum and whole blood without sample pretreatment.
