Stigmatic ion images of artificial patterns were successfully observed and the spatial resolution was estimated to be 3-4 (mu)m at the ion optical magnification of 20-fold. Stigmatic ion images of tissue sections stained with dyes were also successfully observed with a spatial resolution in a range of (mu)m. Stigmatic mass microscope developed in this research should be suitable for high-spatial resolution and high-throughput imaging mass spectrometry. Since the ion detection system used in this experiment can measure only the total ion image or the ion image selected by an ion gate (deflector), we are now developing a position- and time- sensitive ion detection system.
