68 Prostate tissue samples from 34 patients were imaged using DESI-MS (resolution 200(mu)m). Changes in the GP profiles do not provide clear diagnosis by DESI-MS. Cholesterol sulfate at high relative intensities in cancerous tissues and tissues containing PIN. In the prostate tissue samples; cancer/precancerous vs. normal is correctly predicted in 64 out of 68 tissue samples using cholesterol sulfate as the marker compound. Future studies to evaluate cholesterol sulfate as a marker compound in serum or urine.
