The combination of proteomics and transcriptomics was well adapted to simultaneously gain insights in the regulation of key protein/gene expressions during fasting/refeeding. More marked magnitude of variations were generally observed for gene in comparison to protein expressions. The main fasting-induced alterations included differences in the level of proteins involved in carbohydrate metabolism and energy production/conversion, all these steps being essential for muscle ATP synthesis. On the whole, our results provide a molecular basis that would favour decreased muscle ATP production during prolonged fasting. Muscle ATP content during fasting/refeeding is currently being assayed.
