Membrane introduction mass spectrometry (MIMS) is a useful on-line technique that uses a membrane as an on-line sampling interface for direct analyte introduction to a mass spectrometer, resolving analyte mixtures via tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). We used a MIMS-MS/MS system as an on-line air-monitoring platform for volatile and semi- volatile (VOC and SVOC) molecules operated in a moving vehicle. The study was conducted during both winter and summertime air stagnation events (worst case scenarios for air quality). The aim of this work was to characterize community scale spatial variability in hazardous air pollutants (aka "air toxics"), in order to understand the extent to which fixed site regulatory monitors reflect concentrations of air toxics in the surrounding communities.
