A nitrated peptide which belongs to transmembrane protein 221 was identified in a HIV-E sample after 3-nitrotyrosine peptide enrichment. Spectral counting was used for the relative quantitation of the nitrotyrosine modified proteins in the individual control, HIV and HIV-E brain lysates. We found that the number of nitrated proteins was maximal in the patient with HIVE. We detected 28 nitrated proteins in control, HIV+ and HIVE brain samples. Of these 7 were elevated in HIVE, 15 were uniquely identified in HIVE. Major biological processes potentially affect by these proteins include response to stimulus, cell communication and cell death.
