Mass spectrometry confirms a >18-fold induction of MTD secretion into the apoplast upon exposure to SA (an endogenous elicitor of pathogen defense response), thus suggesting a secondary extracellular role for MTD in plant-pathogen interactions. Because MTD lacks a signal peptide sequence for Golgi-mediated secretion, its presence in the apoplast following SA exposure suggests the existence of a previously uncharacterized secretion pathway in plants.
