There is no need to tell this catchment that the distal third metacarpal of the equine athlete is plagued by pathologies that frequently result in the termination of racing career, or life. Much of this, no doubt, has to do with breeding for speed, and because of fast work, associated tissue overload. Particular emphases of our studies have been the fine structure of the tissues through that fractures initiate, particularly lateral condylar fractures, and changes that can be associated with trainingand racing exercise. To this end, we have utilised groups of young horses that underwent specified training regimes compared with those that did not, and track fatalities.
