CLINICAL PATHOLOGIC CORRELATES OBSERVED IN CANINE PROTEINURIC RENAL DISEASES

Proteinuric kidney diseases (glomerulopathies) are an important cause of kidney disease in dogs, but their diagnostic evaluation, classification, and management remain poorly characterized compared to other renal pathology. Accurate identification andappropriate treatment of canine glomerular diseases can be expected to yield consequential improvements in clinical outcomes by providing a basis for clinical trials that may provide a basis for more specific management of these diverse conditions. In humans, specific glomerular diseases are characterized and identified by their light, immunopathologic, and electron microscopic features which are correlated with the particular clinical and clinicopathologic findings that are exhibited by affected patients. The clinical characteristics and the morphologic features of the renal biopsy are used to provide a final diagnosis for patients. This occurs as the result of a collaborative effort engaging both the clinical specialist (nephrologist) and renal pathologist. Diagnosis of a patient's glomerular disease provides insights about the disorder's pathogenesis and prognosis, as well as guidelines for appropriate treatment.
