The pathogenic bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis has made a dramatic global resurgence in recent years, and approximately one third of the world's population is thought to be infected. New strategies are needed to combat the bacterium, and several novel targets have been identified based on information from the Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome sequence. The numerous cytochrome P450 enzymes in the bacterium are potential targets, and certain azole-based inhibitors have proved highly effective antitubercular drugs. This chapter reports selected outcomes of our group's recent studies on the Mycobacterium tuberculosis P450s and their redox partner systems.
