A Method of Providing Care to Children with Complex Craniofacial Problems from Underserved Countries

Background Craniofacial disorders are rare but potentially devastating problems. Incidence around the world ranges from 1:500 to 1:3000. The treatment and management of these complex craniofacial problems require a multidisciplinary approach involving the craniofacial surgeon, neurosurgeon, anesthesiologist, ophthalmologist, pediatrician, pediatric intensivist, dentist, geneticist, social workers and supportive staff. In addition, appropriate high level facilities with requisite staff are also needed, including appropriate intensive care and operating facilities and blood bank capabilities. Many underserved countries lack these resources, and patients with complex craniofacial disorders in these countries are often left to live with their disfiguring features as societal outcasts.
