Cincinnati Children's Hospital plastic surgeons have preformed over 100 neonatal/young infant mandibular distractions for airway reconstruction. Our substantial experience with these patients has led us to critically analyze our results in an effort to clarify indications, refine surgical management, and avoid morbidity in these technically challenging cases. We present our experience and evaluate our long term results in terms of corporal and facial growth, airway correction, dental development, and need for secondary procedures. Minimizing dissection and utilizing a simplified rapid distraction regimen has provided a reliable method for treating congenital micrognathia.
