In early 1990s, Natural Gas (NG) was added as an injected fuel into United States Steel Canada, Hamilton Works No.5 Blast Furnace to reduce hot blast moisture injection. A state of the art turn key Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) facility was commissioned in 1995. The Kawasaki Steel PCI Facility was built primarily to offset the production coke shortfall with the shutdown of No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 Coke Oven Batteries. This paper will focus on the continuous improvements that were made in fuel injection technology that include process control strategies, best operating practices, fuel lance design and geometry configuration and CFD modeling studies. Both merits and limitations of a combined natural gas and PCI with a multiple oxidant tuyere level system are also discussed.
