Healthy workplace practices are linked to employee well-being and organizational improvements. Employee well-being is defined as the degree to which a person fully functions at work. Employee motivation is related to organizational improvement goals and employee well-being. Employee well-being metrics with sensitivity beyond job satisfaction are needed to provide managers feedback on employee motivation. A measure of employee well-being, work engagement, is evaluated as an indicator of work motivation. When attributes of work motivation and work engagement are compared, similarities in definitions point to convergence between constructs. A research model is presented that adapts a goal theory model of work motivation to evaluate correlations between work engagement, goal orientation, goal attributes, occupational self-efficacy, and job characteristics. The model is tested using a cross-sectional field study approach. A pilot study is conducted to assess validity and reliability of survey instruments. Results of the study are presented. Implications for management are discussed.
