Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen.I am delighted to be presenting this paper on phenol and acetone to you this morning. The title of my speech is Acetone-Making the Phenol Industry an offer it can't refuse. The phrase-to make someone an offer they can't refuse-is a particularly American one and stems from its colloquial use in organised crime. On the surface it seems quite nice-an offer that someone can't refuse must be very good! But in fact it is a euphemism for something more sinister, for example it may be used to describe when someone is being assasinated. Not so much an offer they couldn't refuse as something being done to them which they couldn't escape!
