This paper covers our experiences modifying a Haas CNC lathe with a model 4R-H, step compensated, hydrostatic spindle. Professional Instruments Company is well known as a manufacturer of precision spindles, but we also do high precision subcontract machining for a variety of customers. One of our biggest customers requires large numbers of precision lens holders that have sub-micron tolerances on roundness, flatness and concentricity. In the past, this level of precision could only be achieved by grinding on air bearing equipped machines, but with the number of parts required that was determined to be impractical.
