SEROPREVALENCE OF SWINE INFLUENZA VIRUSES IN BRITTANY

Swine influenza viruses of H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes have been widespread in Europe since the early 1980s. A third subtype was isolated in Great Britain in 1994 (1) and in several countries on the European mainland since 1998-2000 (2,3). In Brittany, harbouring 57% of the French pig production, the last serosurvey was undertaken during the EU concerted action "European Surveillance Network for Influenza in Pigs" (ESNIP) (4). The latter survey showed that pigs had antibodies to H1N1 and H1N2, but not toH3N2. H3N2 antibodies or virus have not been reported in pigs in Brittany since 1999 (2). In this paper, we report the results of a serosurvey that was undertaken in 2006.
