Strain variability of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae the etiologic agent of enzotic pneumonia (EP) has been reported over recent years and makes molecular typing an ideal tool for epidemiological investigations. We recently established a very promising variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) approach allowing direct typing of clinical material based on the polyserine-repeat motif encoding part of the pi46 gene (1). In addition we also established a multi locus sequence typing (MLST) scheme for M. hyopneumoniae (2). Both typing methods were assessed and compared using a set of well-defined field samples and strains of M. hyopneumoniae.
