Biodiesel - A futuristic approach for energy security in India(Abstract)

Biodiesel is an eco-friendly, alternative diesel fuel prepared from domestic renewable resources, which has striking similarity to petroleum derived diesel. The major application of biodiesel is in transportation sector as an alternative to mineral diesel. However, mostly it is used in 5-20% blends, rather than as neat biodiesel. India is consuming over a whopping 127mmt of crude oil a year and is forced to import crude - about 70% of its needs. India is expected to import about 85% of its needs in the near future. Presently India consumes about 40mmt of diesel in a year.
