Metals, Amyloid and Oxidative Stress in Alzheimer's Disease

There is currently no effective therapy for Alzheimer's disease. The disease is characterized by an increase in tissue iron, and accumulation of copper and zinc in amyloid plaques, associated with a perturbation in metal homeostasis. Therapeutic agents which modulate metal bio-avalability such as small molecules utilizing metal-based therapeutics have shown promise in the treatment of the disease and are currently progressing through clinical trials.
