INTRODUCTION

As I sit down to write this introduction to the nineteenth John Bowlby Memorial Conference 2012 on the theme of 'Talking Bodies: How do we Integrate Working with the Body in Psychotherapy from an Attachment and Relational Perspective?" I am reminded that it was ten years ago that I was involved in the planning of the tenth conference in this series entitled "Touch: Attachment and the Body", where Susie Orbach delivered the John Bowlby Memorial Lecture with the title "The Body in Clinical Practice". In this groundbreaking event, the under-theorising of the body within psychoanalytic psychotherapy at that time was highlighted.
