Compressive Fatigue and Thermal Compressive Fatigue of Hybrid Resin Base Dental Composites

The object of this paper is to investigate the compressive and thermal-compressive fatigue behaviour of four hybrid resin base dental composites. Cylindrical specimens (6mm in length x3 mm in diameter) were made considering manufacturers' recommendation and stored for 48 hours in distilled water at 37°C. The compressive fracture strength was measured and fatigue tests under frequency of 10 Hz were carried out. For thermal-compressive fatigue test a cyclic flowing cold and hot-water set designed. The compressive strength of the four materials KURARY? Clearfill AP-X (AP-X), 3M ESPE? Supreme, SAREMCO? Extra Low Shrinkage (ELS) and Tetric? Ceram were obtained. Supreme showed the highest compressive fracture strength and thermal compressive strength while ELS was the lowest. The compressive fatigue strengths obtained using staircase method for 100,000 cycles under sinusoidal loading and based on compressive fracture strength, the acquired data were analyzed using ANOVA and Weibull statistics. The results indicate that the Supreme and ELS composites hold the highest and lowest fatigue strengths, respectively. This seems to be caused by the superior matrix properties associated with the different type of fillers alongside the highest ratio of Vol%/ Wt%.
