Burkholderia phymatum KM16-22 is a Tn5-induced mutant of the beta-rhizobium Bwkholderiaphymatum STM815. The mutant KM16-22 is unable to form root nodules on Mimosa pudica, but still causes root-hair deformation, which is the early step of infection. The Tn5-interrupted site of gene in KM16-22 has been determined (Figure 1) and the sequences strongly resemble the deduced amino-acid sequences of the genes encoding 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate-dependent phosphoglycerate mutase (PGM) (87-93% identity to Burkholderia spp., 78-81% identity to Cupriavidus/Ralstonia spp., and 66% identity to Escherichia coli). PGM is an important enzyme for both glycolysis and glu-coneogenesis.
