Double titanium-aluminium nitride with layer structure, Ti_2AlN, have very interesting mechanical properties. Dense, polycrystalline materials of Ti_2AlN are pseudoplastic ceramics as a result of the specific, heterodesmic structure. The self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) followed by hot-pressing is usually applied to synthesize such complex compound in the form of sinterable powders being a good precursors of the dense materials. The present work shows results of investigations on SHS synthesis of Ti_2AlN powders with the use of intermetallic Ti-Al compounds. The influence of sintering temperature, time of heat-treatment and atmosphere on phase composition of the sintered bodies was also examined.
