Low Energy Mixing or Heat Exchange of Difficult or Delicate Viscous Compositions Using the Rotated Arc Mixer

The Rotated Arc Mixer (RAM) mixes viscous fluids with minimal energy either in batch or in-line. A jacketed version of the RAM provides heat exchange capabilities. The RAM has concentric, tightly fitted outer rotating and inner stationary cylinders, the latter with several openings—otherwise it has no internal structure. As fluid flows through the inner cylinder, the outer cylinder rotation induces transverse flow at the openings of the inner cylinder, reorienting the steady, laminar flow at each opening.
