The project presented here differs from most other projects by the use of continuous development and modeling in order to give the least possible impact on the environment, economical optimization and customization of the method of clean up to protect a large abstraction site. Our site is a former animal fur cleaner situated adjacent to a cemetery and in a housing area. The site contains a massive spill of chlorinated solvents, primarily PCE. The contamination is a health risk to the inhabitants of the area. The contamination on the site is also a threat to the largest abstraction site in Denmark. Because of this double threat it was decided to conduct a treatment train to initially secure the housing and finally protect the groundwater resource. The treatment train comprised of a combination of three techniques; active ventilation, pump & treat and in situ thermal desorption (ISTD).
