Solutions-IES designed effective treatment approaches using emulsified edible oil substrate (EOS) to remediate trichloroethene (TCE) source areas at two Department of Defense installations. Each site posed unique design challenges. At the first site, Solu- tions-IES conducted an ESTCP-funded pilot test at the Naval Weapons Station (NWS) in Charleston, SC in a heavily wooded area with high TCE concentrations, a low yielding aquifer, and nearly-flat groundwater gradient. The pilot test area comprised 400 ft2, approximately 10 feet thick. At the second site, the Army Environmental Center retained Solutions-IES to treat a 10,000 ft2 source area, approximately 15 feet thick, at the former Tarheel Army Missile Plant in Burlington, NC. At this site, low concentrations of TCE were present in complex saprolite with low well yields.
