Past operations at Hill Air Force Base (AFB) in Utah resulted in the contamination of soil and groundwater around the base by chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene (TCE). Using site soil and groundwater from Hill AFB with high bioavailable iron, laboratory treatability studies showed that only the addition of both carbon donor and Bachman Road culture could stimulate complete dechlorination. Obvious reduction of ferric iron during biostimulation of the OU5 aquifer material was observed, which im-plied the possibility of competition with dechlorinating bacteria for carbon donor by iron-reducing bacteria. Molecular characterization of both the Bachman Road culture and the contaminated aquifer are therefore needed to provide additional insight into their complex community composition and improve our understanding of the components of a community that are necessary to provide effective reductive dechlorination.
