A direct comparison of two commercially available trichloroethene (TCE)-degrading bioaugmentation cultures was made in a microcosm-based treatability study. The SiREM KB-1~R culture and the Shaw SDC-9~(TM) culture were each bioaugmented into microcosms amended with various electron donors, soil, and groundwater. Control microcosms were also constructed with no bioaugmentation cultures. Groundwater in the microcosms was spiked with approximately 6,000 μg/L of TCE, 450 μg/L of chloroform (CF), and 100 μg/L of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). Injected electron donors included sodium citrate, whey powder, sodium lactate, mother liquor, Newman Zone, and whey powder plus nutrient. Microcosms were setup in 240-milliliter serum bottles in duplicate and the study lasted 134 days (October 30th, 2006 to March 13th, 2007). TCE degradation in the microcosms was monitored first on a bi-weekly basis, then on a monthly basis for the last three sampling rounds.
