Community Involvement and Risk Communication: A Case Study – NASA’s JPL CERCLA Site(Abstract)

Common waste disposal practices more than 50 years ago eventually resulted in unacceptable levels of chemicals in groundwater within the aquifer hundreds of feet beneath NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and beneath adjacent areas. NASA is con- ducting a CERCLA cleanup that includes comprehensive public involvement. Using NASA site examples at JPL and Santa Susana Field Lab, this presentation and discussion examines how public involvement programs may use “risk communication” principles to foster and encourage public involvement in cleanup processes.
