Rice, unlike wheat, is typically consumed as intact kernels. This makes the visual appearance of the grain a critical quality parameter. Many rice defects appear as various discolorations. Some discolorations can affect the entire seed, such as immaturity (green) and heating (yellow) (Padua). Other discolorations can be localised, such as brown or black patches due to microbial or mite attack (NIIR Board of Consultants & Engineers, 2006). Inappropriate varieties can also be detected as discoloured seeds (red, gray, black).
