The environmental noise directive came into force 2002 requiring EU Member States to report, for example, their noise mapping results and action planning activities. The deadlines for the first three reports expired in 2005: They concerned reports of limit values, competent authorities and areas to be noise mapped. By now the majority of the Member States have reported on these obligations and the European Environment Agency (EEA) has reviewed the results upon the request of the Commission's services. The synthetic picture of Europe is interesting as it reveals the overall situation for on-going noise mapping activities. The presentation offers the most recent data of the total coverage of the European transport network and of the population. The next reporting deadline which concerns the strategic noise maps is due by the end of 2007. To assist countries in their reporting the EEA has developed, upon the request of the Commission's services, a proposal for a reporting mechanism. This proposal has recently been presented to Member States experts and could form the basis for further reporting guidelines for Member States. The presentation will give an overview of the most up-to date version.
