Difference of the sound quality evaluation between amateurs and professionals

The evaluation of sound quality of car interior noise is significantly different from the one obtained by the amateurs subjects and by the professional subjects because of the reason that professional subjects know well about the physical meaning of the sound. On the other hand, the amateur subjects do not know well about the cause of the difference of the different sounds at their perceptions. In order to see these differences well, subjective evaluation of idle noises emitted from the diesel engine cars is conducted by professional subjects within two countries including Japan and United States of America. Together with these subject's groups, Japanese amateur subjects, i.e., university students are also joined the experiment to see the difference in evaluation. As a result, we could find a clear tendency between the professional's and amateur's judgment for some evaluations, such as the sounds are how much impulsive or not impulsive.
