This paper reports on wear of WC-Co inserts when end milling a near-β titanium alloy characterized by a fine-sized microstructure (order of 1μm) (Ti-x). The study focuses on post-mortem SEM observations of wear patterns and material transfer for two groups of inserts: uncoated WC-Co, and WC-Co coated with multi layers of TiAlN. Observations are compared to wear patterns, studied under identical conditions, while milling the α-β alloy Ti6Al4V. Results show that wear modes for inserts used in machining the Ti-x alloy exhibit contrast those exhibited by inserts used in machining Ti6Al4V.
