Ammonia (NH_3) is the most abundant gaseous base and responsible for neutralizing a large fraction of acidic gases promoting the formation of atmospheric particles. Therefore, the contribution of ammonia to the formation of secondary particles (PM_(2.5) and PM_(10)) in a regional scale is examined. The aerosols result from SO_2 and NOx via sulfuric and nitric acid formation in the gas- and the liquid-phase and following subsequent reactions with ammonia. A period in May and a period in August/September 2006 were simulated by a nested application of the model system LM-MUSCAT.
