The development of Wartsila 4-stroke engine portfolio has recently been focused both on introduction of new engine products and also on development of new technologies. One of the major introductions in the portfolio is the recent launch of the new Wartsila 46F engine, and the technical aspects are presented in detail in this paper. This engine is designed to meet the current and future emission requirements. It is compact in size due to the optimised design also due to the high power density. The engine has a rotation speed of 600 rpm, which is novel in this engine size. Thanks to the design for high combustion pressures and high rotation speed, the engine output is 1250 kW/cyl, which represents a state-of-the art level in this big engine category. Additional features are the design for easy installation and maintenance. Laboratory test experiences are also presented in the paper to witness the success of the design for high efficiency, low emissions and high reliability. An increasing number of Wartsila 46F engines in various cylinder configurations are being delivered to customers from 2006 onwards. The smaller power output range of the engine portfolio has been updated with the introduction of the new Wartsila Auxpac 20. This product is a generating set which is built from the highly successful Wartsila 20 engine. Easiness of installation and operation has been the major focus areas in this development of this product and those are described widely in this paper. Gas engines are an integral part of the Wartsila 4-stroke engine range and Wartsila has today the widest range of offering in the portfolio in this range. The latest developments have been focused on introduction of new cylinder configurations as well as on upgrades on engine output levels. These developments are described in together with the achieved performance and emission levels. Environmental awareness is guiding the power producers to focus more and more on solutions which have limited impact on environment. In order to respond into these needs, Wartsila has studied alternative, bio-based oils which could be used as fuel for the engines. This development has resulted into engines which can be run using biofuels. The coverage of engine portfolio and application of these technologies are discussed in this paper. Common rail injection is one of the key technologies which has been launched on a number of Wartsila engines of different bore sizes. It gives more flexibility in optimising combustion towards lower exhaust emissions and allows for a better trade-off of NO_x emissions versus engine efficiency. The paper will give a short an update of the roll-out status and latest improvements introduced on Wartsilas common rail engine portfolio.
