Increasing concern and regulation related to the safety aspects of storing and handling pesticides call for innovative, cost effective design solutions. A recently completed facility at a Rutgers University research farm includes design elements thatpromote safe handling and storage of pesticides. The building incorporates secondary containment as well as features that prevent unintended discharges of pesticides into the local environment. The facility is designed to enhance worker safety by providing adequate ventilation, suitable lighting and air conditioning. In addition, the layout of the building supports efficient and safe handling of pesticides. This report compares this facility with features of other storage and handling buildings and explores advantages and shortcomings of different solutions. The report also considers possibilities for future advancements in improving pesticide storage and handling.
