This work describes the start-up and operation of a 427 m~3 full scale anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) treating low strength swine manure at the Oklahoma State University Swine Research and Education Center. The ASBR was started without seedsludge, utilizing only dilute swine manure from pit recharge swine buildings. During startup, the ASBR was operated with one cycle per day: 8 min feed, 22 hour 5 min react, 45 min settle, and 12 min decant times. Hydraulic retention time was maintainedat 20 days, treating an average daily manure volume of 17.8 m~3. No solids were wasted during the startup. Operational goals were to maintain continuous automated operation, accumulate a mixed liquor total solids concentration of 2 kg/m~3, maintain consistent biogas production, and provide complete waste stabilization. Treatment and biogas observations show that reactor start-up without seed sludge is possible, but overall start-up time may be longer than with a seeded reactor.
