Crop performance and irrigation management are directly affected not only by the monthly and annual rain volume, but also by the intensity of individual rainstorms. The rainfall-runoff relationship for any rainstorm is dependent on the dynamic interaction between rain intensity, soil infiltration and surface storage. A study was carried out to analyze the rainfall pattern around Ibadan metropolis using a 10-year rainfall (1991-2000) data obtained from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan. The rainfall data was analyzed for irrigation planning and management. It was observed that most of the yearly rainfall is adequate for all year round crop production if provision of timely rain storage is carried out during the rainy season.The analysis generally showed that most water deficit occurred in the months of January and February. Long-term rainfall amount and intensity are necessary information for reliable water resource planning.
