In the brain, monoamines, dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5HT), act as neuromodulators, diffusing from the nuclei to affect slow-acting receptors of many neurons. Levels of monoamines are important not only for cognitive functions, including memory and learning, but also mood, appetite, and sleep. However, the relationship between actual monoamines' concentrations within the nuclei and behavioral output remains unclear. Here, utilizing imaging mass spectrometry (IMS), we generate a 3-dimensional mouse whole brain atlas of serotonin (5HT), dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE), consisted of 30 coronal slice images.
